Sabetha Middle School Earns Governor's Award for Second Consecutive Year

At the November 2, 2009 board meeting, Superintendent Dennis Stones proudly presented SMS Principal Tom Palmer with a plaque honoring the school's recently won award from the governor of Kansas.  SMS has earned the Governor's Achievement Award for the second consecutive year.  According to the Kansas Department of Education, to earn this prestigious award a school must have achieved:

  • Standard of Excellence in both reading and mathematics for 2009
  • Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in both reading and mathematics and one additional measure in 2009  (For elementary schools and middle/junior high schools—attendance; for high schools—graduation rate)
  • Top 5% in both reading and mathematics on the 2009 state assessments at its respective level (elementary, middle/junior high, and high)

In 2009, forty-one elementary schools, 12 middle/junior high schools, and 17 high schools in the state qualified for the award.  To read more about this award, visit the Kansas State Department of Education, website at:  KSDE Governor's Award Article.

Superintendent Stones recognized the hard work of students and staff in the district that results in awards such as this honor.
